Word Play!

In Two Heads Are Better Than One Beta, the clone, gets very confused about baseball terms. What other sports terms might confuse Beta? What would he think of these sports: Soccer, football, basketball, and hockey?

Using the following sports glossaries, write next to each word what the clones would think it means. Next, create a short story or chapter about the clones trying to play one of these sports.

Soccer
Banana kick
Real Definition: kick that gives ball curved path
Example Clone Definition: kick that turns the ball into a banana so you can eat it.

Break: when a team quickly advances the ball down the field
Club: a team that plays in a league
Draw: a game that ends with a tied score
Foot trap: a player’s use of bottom or sides of shoe to control a low bouncing or rolling ball
Foul: break rules
Hat trick: three or more goals scored in a game by a single player
Hook: curved trajectory of a ball due to spin
Juggling: keep a ball in air with any part of body besides the hands or arms
Push pass: when player pushes ball with inside of foot to teammate
Bicycle kick: when a player kicks the ball in mid-air backwards and over his own head
Shot: ball kicked or headed by a player in mid-air backwards and over his own head
Steal: when players take the ball away from the opposing team
Wall: a line of two-six defending players
Wings: the outside forwards

Football

Bomb: a long pass thrown to a receiver
Bowl: game a college football championship
Clipping: blocking an opposing player below the waist from behind
Dead ball: when a play is over
Foul: breaking rules by a team or player
Live ball: once ball is snapped or free kicked
Nickel defense: bring in a fifth defensive back
Reading the defense: recognizing defensive formation by quarterback
Sack tackle: quarterback
Spike: player throws ball at the ground to celebrate a touchdown
Super Bowl: Championship game NFL
Drive: the series of plays a team puts together in an attempt to score

Basketball

Basket: corded net where points scared
A live ball: when released by a shooter
Blind pass: pass by player who does not see receive
Dead ball: after each successful field goal or attempt, official’s whistle or if ball
Court: where basketball game is played
Flagrant foul: excessive contact or foul-break rules
Foul shot: free throw
Guards: two players on each team who are smallest on the court
Key or keyhole: area end of the court
Live ball: in play
Point-shaving: win game but by fewer points
Shooter: play who takes a shot at the basket

Baseball

Bases loaded: All three bases are occupied by runners
Batter’s box: area next to home plate in which a batter stands
Battery: The pitcher and the catcher
Beanball: a pitch that is intentionally thrown at the batter
Bullpen: area where the relief pitchers wait and warm up
Clean up hitter: fourth player in the batting order
Crowding the plate: where a player moves up close to the plate
Dugout: waiting area for players
Double header: two games played one after the other
Farm club: minor league linked to parent club in the major leagues
Fly ball: a batted ball hit high
Foul ball: a batted ball that lands in foul ball territory
Choke: when a batter moves their hands down the bat
Cut-off man: a fielder who intercepts a ball that has been thrown.
Hot box: when the defensive team traps a base runner between the bases
Live ball: a ball in play
Steal the base: when a player on base makes it to another base while the ball is live but not during a hit
Wild pitch: eludes catcher and allows runner to advance.
Around the horn: 5-4-3 double play
In the hole: the player who takes a turn at bat second after the current batter.
On his horse: outfielder running after a fly ball
Snowcone: fielder catches a ball and portion of it sticks out.
Workhorse: a pitcher who can pitch a lot of innings


Ice hockey

Attacking zone: area that is between opponent’s blue line and goal
Beat the goalie: to outwit goalie and score
Blind pass: to pass the puck without looking
Body check: when a player bumps into an opponent
Butt-ending: a minor penalty when the opponent is hit with the top of a player’s hockey stick
Dead puck: a puck flies out of the rink or is caught
Feeding: passing the puck
Foul: breaking rules that will cause a penalty
Hat trick: Three or more goals scored by a player in a game
Icing: a violation when shoot from behind a red center line
Penalty killer: a player good at getting control of a loose puck
Policeman: enforcer; a player who protects teammates from harm
Wings: two players who flank the center
